Choosing between Metro Line 2 and Tianhe Airport railway station for Hankou, Wuchang and Hanyang
Choose Metro Line 2 or a booked train from Wuhan Tianhe Airport, with practical routes to Hankou, Wuchang and Hanyang and T2/T3 directions.

For most arrivals, Metro Line 2 is the simplest choice. It runs through Hankou and crosses the Yangtze into Wuchang without a reservation. The national railway can be useful for Hankou railway station or, on selected services, Wuchang railway station, but departures are timetable-dependent and require a ticket for a specific train.
The quick choice
| Your destination | Usually the better option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hankou railway station | Check 12306 first; use Line 2 if the timing is poor | Both can be direct, but railway departures are less frequent |
| Fanhu, Wangjiadun East, Qingnian Road, Zhongshan Park or Jianghan Road | Metro Line 2 | Direct service to central Hankou stops |
| Hongshan Square, Zhongnan Road, Jiedaokou or the Optics Valley corridor | Metro Line 2 | Direct service across the river into Wuchang |
| Wuchang railway station | A direct train if one suits; otherwise Line 2 and Line 4 | Not every airport train serves Wuchang |
| Hanyang | Metro, usually changing at Jianghan Road for Line 6 | The airport railway does not directly serve Hanyang |
| Late-night arrival | Compare the airport bus and a taxi if rail has finished | Do not assume either rail service will still be running after baggage reclaim |
Metro Line 2: the dependable default
From Tianhe Airport station (天河机场), take Line 2 towards Fozuling (佛祖岭). No change is needed for Hankou railway station, Fanhu, Jianghan Road, Hongshan Square, Zhongnan Road or Jiedaokou. The official Wuhan Metro network map shows Line 2 continuing east through Wuhan East railway station to Fozuling.
Useful arrival patterns are:
- Hankou: stay on Line 2 for Hankou Railway Station, Fanhu, Wangjiadun East, Qingnian Road, Zhongshan Park and Jianghan Road.
- Wuchang: stay aboard across the river for Hongshan Square, Zhongnan Road, Jiedaokou and stations farther east. For Wuchang railway station, change from Line 2 to Line 4 at Zhongnan Road.
- Hanyang: change at Jianghan Road to Line 6 for stops including Qintai and Zhongjiacun. Check the final walk to the hotel before deciding whether this transfer is convenient.
The airport publishes metro operating hours of 06:00–23:00 on working days and 06:30–23:00 on holidays, with intervals of five to eight minutes, while directing passengers to Wuhan Metro for operational updates (Wuhan Tianhe International Airport). These are published system hours, not a guarantee that a useful train will remain after a late landing and baggage collection. Check the station display or Wuhan Metro on the day, especially around public holidays.
Metro fares are distance-based. The published structure starts at ¥2 for journeys of up to 4 km, then increases in distance bands (Wuhan municipal fare notice). For an occasional journey, use the fare shown for your destination at the station.
Airport railway: useful when a departure fits
The national railway station is also named Tianhe Airport (天河机场). The airport says trains from it serve Hankou and Wuchang railway stations, as well as destinations elsewhere in Hubei, but refers passengers to China Railway for the actual timetable (airport public-transport guide).
Search the official China Railway 12306 site or app from 天河机场 to the required station on your arrival date. Before buying, check:
- The exact destination. Hankou (汉口), Wuchang (武昌) and Wuhan (武汉) are different railway stations in different parts of the city.
- The departure time. Leave enough time for immigration where applicable, baggage collection and the walk to the railway concourse.
- The stopping pattern. A train from the airport may serve Hankou without continuing to Wuchang.
- The final connection. A convenient train to Hankou is less useful if the hotel is beside a Line 2 station in Wuchang.
Passengers booking with a foreign passport can consult 12306’s official foreign-passport identity-verification instructions.
Practical rule: choose the railway when 12306 shows a comfortably timed direct departure to the station you need. Otherwise, Line 2 provides a simpler turn-up-and-go journey into both Hankou and Wuchang.
Finding the stations from T3 or T2
At Terminal 3, leave the second-floor arrivals hall through doors 6, 7 or 8 and follow signs through the transport centre:
- Metro: Line 2 via entrance B.
- Railway: Tianhe Airport railway station via entrance C.
At Terminal 2, use the airport’s Airport Route 3 (空港3路) terminal shuttle. It leaves from the T2 ground-floor pickup at door 10 and goes to T3 door 12; from there, continue through the transport centre to metro entrance B or railway entrance C. The airport publishes a service span of 06:00–23:00 and an average interval of five minutes for this shuttle (airport guide).
If a flight reaches T2 near 23:00, do not plan around the final shuttle or metro without checking current operations. The airport’s transport page also lists airport buses: its city services begin at 08:30 and continue until the day’s flights finish, with published stops including Hankou railway station, Fanhu, Wuchang railway station, Hongshan Square and Wuhan railway station. A taxi is the more direct fallback when the available bus does not suit the destination.
